Background

Ronan McSorley was born in the north of Ireland in the early 1980s. He later received a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of East London, going on to work for many years across public mental health services and in private practice as a therapist.

In 2025, he stepped away from clinical work to focus exclusively on his artistic practice. He works primarily in oil on linen and linocut on paper. His process begins with the careful selection of overlooked images, often drawn from old discarded snapshots. He distills each image to its essential elements, drawing out the psychological undercurrents embedded within. Through deliberate cropping, reimagined color, and interpretive reworking, the images take on new forms and meanings.

Ronan is now based in Philadelphia. His work is held in private collections in Ireland, England, and across the United States.
